Springfield ants

Some commonly found ants are:

  • Acrobat ants which have a heart-shaped abdomen. They eat aphids' honeydew, living and dead insects, protein from bird and other droppings, and sugary or meaty foods. Sometimes they build nests in people’s houses. When disturbed, acrobat ants raise up their abdomens and ooze pungent formic acid at their attacker.
  • The odorous house ant is one of type that will make a colony in kitchens, where their workers scavenge sweets or foods high in protein. They will also eat other insects. Outdoors, these little ants can be found almost anywhere, but they especially like to nest under rocks. The Worker ants are less than 1/8 inch long. When smashed, these ants earn their name by producing a rancid or rotting smell.
  • The eastern black carpenter ant is large and named because it builds nest tunnels in already-decaying wood such as rotting logs. Carpenter ants do not eat wood, they only use wood for nesting. They eat sugary and protein-rich substances from plants, plus honeydew of aphids and plant hoppers. They also scavenge for dead insects and eat live ones also.
